Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has lavished praise on Guglielmo Vicario, suggesting that the Italian has arguably been the best goalkeeper in the Premier League this season.
The £17.2m that Spurs paid to sign Vicario from Empoli in the summer already looks like such a huge bargain, particularly considering that Manchester United paid almost three times that amount for another Serie A import in Andre Onana, who has had less than ideal start to his Premier League.
Vicario’s performances at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season might not come as a surprise for those who watched him at Stadio Carlo Castellani last season, but the way the 27-year-old has settled into a high-pressure environment is a testament to his temperament.
Guglielmo Vicario contender for keeper of the season?
The Italian has showcased his excellent decision-making skills and his ability on the ball in spades so far this season but against Everton, he was busier in a conventional sense, having to make several crucial saves as Tottenham defended with their backs to the wall for much of the second half.
Following his display against the Toffees, Gold wrote about Vicario: “If you want to find someone who exemplifies the Postecoglou era at Tottenham Hotspur, look no further than Guglielmo Vicario.
“The Italian is the kind of player the Australian loves. Like him, he’s clambered his way up the rungs of the football ladder. He’s a battler, talented and able to take on information aplenty to ensure the team’s sum is greater than its parts.
“In the majority of matches since he’s arrived Vicario has been called upon only in a few key moments because Spurs dominate much of the play.
“His main job has been with his feet and with his voice, both building up the play quickly from the back and organising those around him.
“The 27-year-old has quickly become a leader at the back and his remarkable start to life in a very different country and league to Italy and Serie A is a huge nod towards his adaptability and willingness to learn and adapt.
“It also says a lot that Vicario has managed to do that while the club’s main goalkeeper for more than a decade still trains alongside him every day and looms large at Hotspur Way without playing any part in matchdays.
“It is also perhaps worth crediting Hugo Lloris or Postecoglou for helping create an atmosphere where Vicario has everyone’s backing as the club’s undisputed number one despite that situation and the Italian has previously credited the French World Cup winner for his help behind the scenes along with goalkeeping coach Rob Burch, who has a five-a-side team’s worth of senior stoppers to work with.
“For Vicario has become a Premier League star in no time and he has to be there in the conversation as potentially the goalkeeper of the season so far in the competition.”
Spurs Web Opinion
In Vicario, we have not only signed a top-class goalkeeper but also a natural leader, with the 27-year-old not being afraid to make his voice heard. So, the Italian has filled the void left by Lloris in more ways than one.
