Ange Postecoglou has admitted that Tottenham have to wait for updates regarding the extent of Pape Matar Sarr’s and Alejo Veliz’s injuries, but he praised the character the latter showed to soldier on in the dying moments of the game.
It appears to be a case of one step forward and two steps back for Spurs on the injury front, with the same pattern repeating itself against Bournemouth.
While Tottenham fans were pleasantly surprised by the early return of Rodrigo Bentancur, his midfield partner, Sarr, had to come off just past the half-hour mark with a tight hamstring.
The 21-year-old was in tears when he came off, perhaps due to fears that the injury would rule him out of Senegal’s African Cup of Nations campaign, with the tournament kicking off in the Ivory Coast in just two weeks.
Postecoglou impressed with Alejo Veliz’s spirit
Veliz, who came on for Ricahrlison on 81 minutes, played with the energy and enthusiasm we have come to expect from the youngster, constantly chasing down every loose ball.
However, the striker went down with an injury in the dying stages and was also inconsolable when he hobbled off, with The Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick revealing that the Argentine left the stadium on crutches and with a brace on his right leg.
With Spurs having made all five of the substitutions, Veliz was keen to soldier on despite his injury, which has garnered praise from Postecoglou.
When asked about the extent of Sarr’s and Veliz’s injuries, the Tottenham head coach told Football.London: “Hard to say. Pape felt his hamstring and he’s emotional because he wants to go away with his national team. It’s a big tournament for them. It’s kind of the way our season has gone.
“He was so good again early in the game, apart from his goal, and then he gets an injury. Disappointing for him but I am hoping it is not too serious and he can still go away and contribute to his country.
“Alejo was in a lot of pain and we’d already done our substitutions so we were trying to get it out to him to just lay down so we can get him off, but it just shows the character of the boy because he knew we had no more substitutions and he just wanted to keep going. I’m not sure the extent of what he’s done but we’ll find out.”

Veliz might have perhaps been keen on going out on loan in January and getting some competitive minutes under his belt and might have feared that the injury had put an end to his hopes of doing so.
Sarr is now in a massive race against time, with Senegal kicking off their AFCON campaign against Gambia on January 15. The midfielder faces a nervous wait for the results of his scan.
