Ange Postecoglou has suggested that the confrontation between the Tottenham and Bournemouth benches towards the end of the game might have been due to a misunderstanding.
The game was generally played in pretty good spirits but things soured a little in the dying stages of the encounter, with the two benches involved in a heated argument and a hint of some pushing and shoving.
Postecoglou was heavily involved, seemingly giving the Andoni Iraola’s assistants an earful and some players from either side also got involved, with Giovani Lo Celso very much in the thick of it while Richarlison and Brennan Johnson helped separate the two benches.
Confusion about Veliz caused touchline argument
The Tottenham head coach has downplayed the incident, revealing that he wanted Alejo Veliz to go down so that the striker could come off and adding that the Cherries bench might have thought he was trying to buy time to make a substitution.
When asked what happened between the two sets of coaching staff, Postecoglou told Football.London: “I was fine. We were just wishing each other a happy new year. It’s alright. Just a little bit of emotion in the game.
“I was more concerned with Alejo because we were kind of trying to get him off the field, and apart from my physically going on the pitch and dragging him off he wasn’t really going to go down.
“So we were just shouting at him and I think the Bournemouth staff thought, I don’t know what they thought, maybe that we were trying to make a substitution but we knew we had none. It was just about getting him off.”
Spurs Web Opinion
The incident was much to about nothing and it is only natural that the emotions can sometimes get the better of players and coaches during tense moments.
