Ange Postecoglou has reserved special praise for Giovani Lo Celso after the Argentine’s impressive showing in Tottenham’s 3-1 win over Bournemouth.
There were signs quite early on that Postecoglou’s system would suit Lo Celso, with the midfielder being one of Tottenham’s best performers during pre-season.
The Lilywhites desperately needed the 27-year-old to step up following James Maddison’s injury and he has done just that, adding plenty of creativity to the Spurs midfielder whenever he has been handed an opportunity.
The former Real Betis man was only handed a start against the Cherries due to Dejan Kulusevski’s suspension but he grabbed it with both hands, arguably being the best player on the pitch and showing the kind of quality he can provide in the number ten role.
Postecoglou over the moon with Giovani Lo Celso
The Argentina international once again made a device contribution going forward, threading a lovely through ball for Son Heung-min’s second goal, but it was his work-rate that particularly impressed Postecoglou.
When asked what he thought of Lo Celso’s performance, the Tottenham boss told Football.London: “Yeah Gio was great. He’s been great the last two or three weeks. With the amount of injuries we’ve had and absences we’ve had, we’ve needed everyone in the group and everybody who has come in has stepped up.
“Gio was very good today, not just with his work rate but you could see his quality on the ball. His passes through and the one through to Sonny was outstanding.
“We needed him today and we’re going to need him going forward because Sonny goes away now, Biss goes away, Pape goes away. So I thought he was a good contributor.”
Spurs Web Opinion
The fact that Son is now off to the Asian Cup makes Postecoglou’s selection decision a lot easier but it would have been fascinating to see what he would have done had he been forced to pick between Kulusevski and Lo Celso. The Argentine is the only other player in the Spurs squad who possesses the kind of vision and passing range that Maddison does.
