Santiago Gimenez’s father, Christian, has now admitted that his son is plotting to leave Feyenoord next summer rather than in January.
Gimenez’s numbers over the past 18 months have been so mindboggling that he is now being compared with the great number nines who have graced Dutch football in the past.
Earlier this month, the Mexican broke the Eredivisie record held by Luis Suarez for the most goals in a calendar year (AS), and it now appears only a matter of time before he makes a step up to a bigger club.
Over the past couple of months, various outlets have reported that that Tottenham’s scouts have been left impressed by the 22-year-old, with many at the North London club said to view him as the ideal man to fill Harry Kane’s shoes (The Mirror).
However, over the last week or two, various publications have reported that the centre-forward is more likely to leave De Kuip in the summer and that it will take a mammoth offer for Feyenoord to consider a sale in January (GiveMeSport).
Gimenez’s father confirms plans to stay for now
The striker’s father has now revealed that his son has never really seriously considered leaving the Rotterdam club until this point, adding that a summer move would be the ideal scenario.
Christian, told Algemeen Dagblad (as relayed by FC Update): “Last summer there was a lot of interest in Santiago. But when Dennis te Kloese (Feyenoord CEO) says that he never doubted that Santiago would stay at Feyenoord, he is telling the truth. We never seriously considered leaving again.”
Addressing the speculation over the striker’s future, Crisitan added: “For a player, leaving in the summer is the best thing.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Gimenez and his entourage would be aware that he would have a lot more options to choose from next summer. With Spurs seemingly not likely to sign a number in January, they might throw their hat in the ring for the Mexican at the end of the season.
