Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur could turn their attention towards Benfica centre-back Morato if they are successful in their pursuit of Jean Clair-Tadibo.
While it emerged a little over a week ago that Spurs had begun talks over a deal for Todibo (TEAMtalk), some journalists have played down Tottenham’s hopes of landing the Frenchman over the last few days.
The likes of The Athletic’s David Ornstein and Football.London’s Alasdair Gold have suggested that a deal for the 23-year-old would not be easy for the Lilywhites to complete, with the latter stating that Nice could put off the defender’s sale until next summer.
Journalist Pete O’Rourke even claimed on Football Insider a couple of days ago that the Ligue 1 club could simply price Tottenham out of a move for their star defender, given his importance to their side.
Another defender who has been mooted as a target for Spurs is Morato, with some updates from Portugal even asserting over the last week that Ange Postecoglou’s men have ‘intensified their observations’ of the Benfica star and are ‘prioritising’ a move for him (O Jogo via Sport Witness).
Could Spurs move for Morato over Radu Dragusin?
Jones has suggested that the 22-year-old could be Tottenham’s main alternative for Todibo, opining that the club’s data-led approach might have led them to the Brazilian.
The journalist told GiveMeSport: “It is a bit left field [Morato], but that’s to us. Maybe internally, this is a path that they’ve been going down to try and be a bit smarter and fit this new data-driven side of recruitment, which they’re trying to look into a bit deeper.
“Obviously, on the flip of that, you’ve got them now looking at Todibo who we’ve known about for a good few months now. We’ve known that Tottenham have this interest in the player.
“It’s a bit complicated because obviously, he’s at Nice, who are owned by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who’s about to get involved at United, who wants to sign Todibo. So I think that does add a layer of uncertainty to it all. But there’s definitely something in it. So we’ll have to wait and see how it progresses.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Based on the reportage over the last couple of weeks, it seems like Radu Dragusin might be the alternative that Spurs have identified for Todibo. However, Tottenham’s plans may change depending on what market opportunities open up in January.
