In a rather surprising development, Tottenham Hotspur have now confirmed that Ashley Phillips has joined Championship side Plymouth Argyle on loan for the remainder of the season.
Phillips joined Tottenham from Blackburn Rovers last summer on the back of his breakthrough season in the Championship and even though he has made the matchday squad on several occasions this season, the centre-back has not made his senior Spurs debut yet.
Ange Postecoglou is dealing with a whole host of injury issues at the back at the moment, with Ben Davies recently joining Cristian Romero on the sidelines while Micky van de Ven has only now returned to action after a two-and-half month injury lay-off.
Tottenham loan Ashley Phillips to Plymouth Argyle
Some might have expected the Australian to thus hang on to Phillips as emergency cover but the North London club have made the decision to send the 18-year-old back to the Championship so that he can get some competitive minutes under his belt.

This news comes amidst reports that Tottenham are hopeful of agreeing a deal with Genoa for Radu Dragusin this week (Fabrizio Romano).

With Emerson showing that he can fill at centre-back in the event of an injury crisis and with Dragusin also set to arrive through the door, Phillips was unlikely to get any game time had he stayed at Spurs. This decision thus does not come as a surprise.
