What kind of player are Tottenham Hotspur going to get with Timo Werner? Fans will know all about the German attacker’s previous spell in England, but there is more to the player than his Chelsea struggles.

Timo Werner looks set to join Tottenham imminently, with a six-month loan deal on the verge of completion. The 27-year-old will join Ange Postecoglou‘s Spurs revolution until the end of the season, with a purchase option thought to be included in the deal (The Athletic).

Timo Werner career stats

Contrary to what people might think, Timo Werner put up some fairly impressive numbers during his time at Chelsea. It is with RB Leipzig where he has excelled the most, however, averaging a goal or assist every 1.33 games.

Across two spells with Leipzig, Werner has made 213 appearances and has registered 113 goals and 47 assists. However, he has dropped down the pecking order this season, and has just two goals across all competitions this term (Transfermarkt).

That is in stark contrast to last season, when Werner bagged 16 goals and added six assists in 40 appearances for the German outfit (Transfermarkt). During the 2022/23 campaign, Werner generated a non-penalty xG of 9.1, placing him in the top ten in the Bundesliga (FBRef).

At Chelsea, Werner was considered a flop, yet his return of 23 goals and 21 assists in 89 games gives him an average of a goal or assist every 2.02 games. That is better than others who play a similar role, such as Gabriel Martinelli (2.61), Jack Grealish (3.61), and Luis Diaz (2.66).

At international level, Werner has 24 goals and six assists to his name for Germany in 57 appearances. He was still in the national team squad at the start of 2023, but injuries over the summer and a lack of regular football have seen him drop out of contention recently.

Timo Werner strengths and weaknesses

Let’s start with the positives, and praise Timo Werner for his incredible pace, high-energy pressing, and impressive dribbling. And, contrary to what many say, he is an adept finisher, sometimes.

Werner’s abilities will suit Ange Postecoglou’s system down to the ground. First and foremost, Postecoglou loves a player with a good attitude, and Werner is more than willing to put in the effort and use his athleticism to help the team.

With the free-flowing, creative play of the Ange-ball approach, there is every chance Werner will find himself in plenty of dangerous areas and, if he can find his shooting boots and build some confidence, he could prove to be just what Spurs are looking for.

Now for the bad news. It has been well-documented that Werner struggled in front of goal for Chelsea, and to be fair he has missed some sitters in his time—though you’d be hard-pressed to find an attacker who hasn’t.

Werner is the epitome of a confidence player, and he can suffer in high-pressure situations sometimes. He’s very similar to Richarlison, though, in that once he gets going, he can be unstoppable.

It is also worth noting that Werner is not the most physical player, so don’t expect to see him tussling with defenders and coming out on top. We should also not expect many headed goals from Werner, as he is not the strongest in the air.

What do The Spurs Web think?

This move could go either way. If Werner can get some momentum and find the goal early on in his Spurs career, he could end up thriving under Postecoglou. However, if things don’t go right in the first couple of games and fans get on his back, Werner could crumble. Either way, it’s a low-risk move for Spurs anyway, as we can just send him back to Leipzig in the summer.
