Ange Postecoglou has said that his decision to award Rodrigo Bentancur the captain’s armband was done as a reward for the hard work that the midfielder has put in behind the scenes over the last few months.
Bentancur has endured quite a torrid 10 months since first injuring his ACL back in February of last year, which was the first long-term injury layoff in the midfielder’s career up to that point.
The 26-year-old worked hard to return to action back in November but in his first game back against Aston Villa, he was on the receiving end of a bad challenge, which sidelined him once again.
The Uruguayan returned to action earlier than expected from his ankle problem, returning to the starting eleven in Tottenham’s win over Bournemouth last Sunday.
With Son Heung-min away at the Asian Cup, and with Cristian Romero and James Maddison out injured, Postecoglou had the decision to make regarding the captaincy for the FA Cup clash against Burnley.
Rodrigo Bentancur has impressed Ange Postecoglou
Most fans would have expected Ben Davies to be handed the armband but the Spurs head coach decided to offer it to Bentancur, who played 83 minutes as the Lilywhites overcame the Clarets 1-0 to progress to the fourth round of the competition.
When asked about the captaincy decision, Postecoglou told Tottenham’s official website: “It’s just a bit of a reward for him. He’s been through a lot these last 18 months.
“I’ve been part of it for six months or so and he embodies everything we want to be as a Club in terms of his attitude and just his character. So it’s just a little bit of a reward for him and we’re delighted for him.”

This was a great touch by Ange and nothing more than what Bentancur deserved. The decision would have also made it clear to the midfielder that the Australian coach sees him as a vital part of his plans at Spurs moving forward.
