Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has revealed that Ange Postecoglou was convinced that Timo Werner would be the right fit for his system, given the intensity that the forward plays with, in and out of possession.
Gold states that Postecoglou was ‘instrumental’ in Tottenham’s decision to sign Werner while the club’s recruitment department also favoured the move since their data-crunching backed up that he is a good fit for what the club were after.
The journalist explains that the Australian coach’s system relies heavily on speed, both on and off the ball, with the German international valued highly because of his ability to harass the opponents out of possession and his directness with the ball at his feet.
Second bite of the cherry for Timo Werner
Gold reveals that the other thing that worked in Werner’s favour is his experience in the Premier League, with Postecoglou wanting a forward who can have an instant impact at the club.
It is revealed that the Tottenham head coach sensed that the 27-year-old was ‘burning with desire’ to prove his critics wrong after struggling to make the expected impact at Chelsea.
Being wary of competition from Manchester United and other clubs, Spurs moved swiftly, with Postecoglou’s phone call alleged to have convinced Werner to make the move to N17.
Spurs Web Opinion
The wingers that Tottenham have signed since Postecoglou’s arrival – Johnson, Solomon and Werner – give a clear indication as to what the Australian expects of his wide players.
The 58-year-old wants attackers to press incessantly and keep running at their opponents throughout the game even if they are not always clinical in their final action.
