Journalist Dean Jones has said that Tottenham Hotspur have not identified an obvious alternative to Conor Gallagher this month should a deal for the Chelsea star be out of their reach.
Spurs fans are certainly over the moon with the way the club has started the transfer window, with the Lilywhites signalling that they mean business.
Ange Postecoglou was quite coy when asked in his press conference a few days ago if he expects the club to make any more signings this month, with the Australian suggesting that they will continue to look for opportunities (Football.London).
Reports over the last few days have suggested that Tottenham are now setting their sights on Gallagher, with some outlets even claiming that the North London side are in regular contact with Chelsea over a deal for the England international (Football Insider).
Tottenham are only looking at Gallagher right now
Jones has now said that Spurs are done strengthening their backline for the time being and that their full focus is now on the 23-year-old Blues academy graduate.
The journalist told GiveMeSport: “I know that Tottenham are not finished in terms of upgrading their defence but I would not expect them to sign another centre-back this month unless it is one for the future. In the summer though, I do think we see another player of that type targeted.
“I don’t think Spurs have a specific midfield target to fall back on if they don’t sign Gallagher. I certainly haven’t heard of anything concrete yet in that sense anyway.
“I think we will see how this situation unfolds first because Tottenham really do see it as an ideal scenario to take advantage of if Chelsea make him available and at the moment there remains a feeling that Chelsea could sell. The starting price on a fee would be £45million.”
Spurs Web Opinion
We know for a fact that Tottenham tend to draw up a shortlist of two or three players for each position and that they move on to the next option if a deal for their top target is not feasible.
The fact that Spurs are still intent on landing Gallagher suggests that they believe that the deal is still quite doable.
