Richarlison has opened up on his off-pitch struggles from a few months ago, revealing that he was struggling to get out of the house at times but has now managed to find happiness once more.
Richarlison publicly spoke about his mental health struggles a few months ago, revealing at the time that he was having issues in his personal life (Globo Esporte).
Things were also not clicking for the striker on the pitch at the time as he came under criticism for his performances for Spurs as well as Brazil.
The 26-year-old’s body language has looked noticeably different over the past few weeks, with the forward appearing to enjoy his football again.
That has understandably translated into better performances, with the forward scoring goals for fun since recovering from his groin injury.
Richarlison is happier at Tottenham now
Richarlison has now opened up on the struggles he was going through and remarked that venting his problems has helped him overcome them.
The Tottenham man told ESPN Brazil: “I think the main thing is happiness. I think I managed to find my happiness again. I was feeling a little down, sad… I wasn’t the Richarlison that everyone knew.
“Even training was different. So, I think I managed to find that again, that hope that I had. This joy that I have inside me. So, that was the most important thing I managed to win back.
“I managed, with the help of the club, to seek this help. This was very important for me, because, as I said, there were days when I didn’t want to leave the house, leave my room, I was going to train, I was going straight home and locked myself in my room. So, this was difficult for me. And like I said, it seems like I talk to people more, venting, I think it seems to have improved.”
Richarlison admitted that he had some ‘prejudice’ about speaking to a professional about his mental struggles, but he added that he is quite happy that he eventually did.
He continued: “And it’s something that, as I’m from the countryside and there it’s kind of like that, with ‘I’m not going to do these sessions, because I’m not crazy’, or something like that.
“Because people from the countryside have this prejudice, my family has this prejudice. So, there came a time when I understood that I needed help. And several people told me that too. So, I sought psychological help and the teacher has really helped me.
“I felt a lot [prejudice]. There is this prejudice, and I ask people to do it, because it’ll help a lot. I think that after you do the first session, you will understand what it means to do the sessions with the psychologist,” the player added. I was very happy. I’m still doing it today and I’ll continue doing it, because it has helped me a lot.”
Spurs Web Opinion
There is no doubt that we have made a lot of progress as a society when it comes to conversations about mental health, with more and more people not being afraid to speak about it publicly.
However, there are still a lot of people (particularly men) who do not feel particularly comfortable talking about their mental issues because they presume it would come across as weak to open up about the problems.
Hopefully, Richarlison’s honesty in addressing this topic will encourage more men to speak about their problems with their loved ones and seek help if they need it.
