Timo Werner has revealed that Cristian Romero called on his teammates to enjoy the occasion against Manchester United and to keep playing their football.
It was a whirlwind few days for Werner last week as his move from RB Leipzig to Tottenham progressed rapidly, with the deal being agreed in a blink of an eye.
After just a couple of training sessions with his new teammates, the German international was named in the starting lineup at one of the most iconic grounds in European football, Old Trafford.
What did Romero say in the Spurs pre-match huddle?
Werner was introduced to Tottenham’s practice of doing their pre-match huddle in front of the travelling section, with Romero addressing the players in the huddle.
The Argentine wore the captain’s armband on his return to the side, with club captain Son Heung-min away at the Asian Cup.
Spurs delivered an impressive display and continued playing with composure for 90 minutes, which Werner revealed was the crux of Romero’s message.
The German international told Spurs Play about the centre-back’s instructions pre-match: “He said we should enjoy and to keep playing our football, it doesn’t matter what’s coming and I think that’s what we did.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Romero has really stood up as a leader this season after a disappointing 2022-23 campaign, with the Argentine now having emerged as one of the most influential players in the dressing room. His return is very timely for Ange Postecoglou’s men, particularly with Son and Maddison still missing.
