Former England star Lianne Sanderson is bewildered as to why Manchester United did not push for James Maddison last summer.
Tottenham and Maddison look like a marriage made in heaven, with the attacking midfielder looking completely at home in the famous Lilywhite shirt from day one.
The 27-year-old looks more than capable of handling the pressure and prestige that comes with the famous number ten shirt and quickly emerged as one of the leaders of Ange Postecoglou’s young side.
The England international is also well on his way to becoming a fan favourite and he has certainly been a big miss for the side over the last couple of months as he continues his rehabilitation from an ankle injury.
How did Spurs land Maddison unchallenged?
Sanderson is puzzled that Man Utd allowed Maddison to go to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a £40m deal while they paid bigger fees for players who are not proven in the Premier League.
She said on The Spurs Chat Podcast: “Maddison, what a signing and I wanted Maddison at Man United, when I said I wanted Maddison when I was on talkSPORT people said he’s not a United type of player, what are people talking about?
“He can actually perform, turn and do things, I don’t know why United wouldn’t be going for players like that instead we’re spending £70m on Hojlund, £80m on Antony and £80m for Sancho, players who aren’t proven in the Premier League.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I think the reason Spurs got a relatively free run at Maddison is that many of the coaches across the Premier League saw him as more of a number ten than a number eight and had doubts about him out of possession.
The likes of Man Utd, Chelsea, Newcastle and others would certainly be ruing the fact that they did not vie for the 27-year-old’s signature.
