Tim Sherwood has compared Manchester City star Rodri to former Tottenham man Mousa Dembele, insisting that the Lilywhites never managed to replace the Belgian.
While Dembele might be underrated by the larger football public in general, Spurs fans are certainly aware of how special a talent he was, as are all the players who shared a dressing room with him.
Nearly every one of his Tottenham teammates have labelled him the best player they have ever played with (Soccer AM), which is some praise considering the amount of world-class talent at the club during the Mauricio Pochettino era.
In fact, Kyle Walker, who has played with some of the best in the world at Manchester City, did not hesitate to name the 36-year-old as the best he has ever seen in an interview with Sky Sports last year.
Have Spurs ever replaced Mousa Dembele?
Sherwood has now spoken about the calm he would feel when Dembele had the ball, insisting that Spurs never managed to find a midfielder who could fill his shoes.
The former Tottenham interim boss told Premier League Productions while talking about Rodri: “His passing with different parts of his feet, he’s a top-drawer player.
“The reference I call him, I had one at Tottenham and they’ve never replaced him, Mousa Dembele, when he had the ball I could just sit back and relax because I knew he would do the right things and the right time, and that’s what Rodri does.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It is ironic how in one breath people speak about how unique some players are and in the next breath they complain about the club not replacing them.
The main reason why the likes of Dembele are one-of-a-kind is because you cannot find a like-for-like replacement for those kinds of players.
