Tottenham legend Michael Dawson has said that Ben Davies deserves more credit than he gets, insisting that players like the Welshman are worth their weight in gold for any squad.
For large parts of his Spurs career, Davies has been seen as the understudy rather than as an automatic starter but the likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte have all valued the defender highly as he has never let them down when called upon.
Following Micky van de Ven’s injury back in November, Ange Postecoglou turned to the 29-year-old to play as a left centre-back in a back four – a position which he has not played in the past.
However, Davies passed the test with flying colours, proving extremely solid at the back and also demonstrating his quality in possession.
Is Ben Davies Tottenham’s most underappreciated player?
The Wales international is now the longest-serving first-team player at Tottenham following the departures of Eric Dier and Hugo Lloris, and Dawson believes that the former Swansea man remains quite underappreciated at Spurs.
The centre-back said on the Official Tottenham Hotspur Podcast: “Ben signed just as I left in 2014. Clubs need players like him, not just off of the pitch, but I don’t think he’s getting the credit he deserves on it by the way.
“He’s been absolutely magnificent. He’s come in for arguably one of the best centre-backs in the league, in Micky, but on the left side, he plays passes, he’s fantastic.”
Spurs Web Opinion
There are quite a few parallels between Daws and Ben, with both being extremely professional and intelligent while also putting the needs of the team first.
As Daws points out, Davies perhaps is not recognised for just how solid a player he actually is, possibly because he has been at the club for a long time and perhaps also because he is Welsh rather than Spanish or Argentinean.
