Ange Postecoglou has revealed that Tottenham have created a fantastic dressing room atmosphere, with the likes of Emerson Royal setting the tone with their attitude in training even though they are not regular starters.
It has been widely reported that Postecoglou values the attitude of players as much as he does their ability, which is why the personalities of different targets are thought to be a key consideration for the Australian before greenlighting new signings (Football.London).
Perhaps that also explains why the Tottenham head coach decided to move on Djed Spence and Tanguy Ndombele without giving them too many opportunities, with there being murmurs of some attitude problems with the right-back and the midfielder.
The Tottenham head coach was asked about Richarlison managing to overcome his mental health struggles and turning around his fortunes, and he suggested that the atmosphere in the squad played a pivotal role in helping the striker do that.
When asked about the former Everton coming a long way in the past couple of months, Postecoglou told Football.London: “I think the team has helped, but not just Richy. It’s a really strong dressing room in terms of the guys being really supportive of each other.
‘We’ve had a number of guys coming back from long-term injuries or missed football and I think the reason they’ve come back and never felt disconnected is because of the dressing room we’ve created.
“For that, you need good leaders. Sonny is definitely that and Romero now, over the last few weeks, has grown even more. He’s a positive influence over everyone in the group and I’m sure Richy.
“I see it on a daily basis, others don’t, but if you watch Emerson Royal train every day, you’d think he plays every game. He’s just outstanding with his attitude and demeanour around the place. There’s no time for anyone to feel down.
“When you see a guy like Emerson, and we’ve got a few in that boat this year like Fraser [Forster] or Ben [Davies], they train so hard every day, always have the greatest disposition in terms of their demeanour, it doesn’t give anyone else an excuse to not feel up for it.
“Those are the kinds of things that make a difference to your dressing room, as well as your leaders. If you’re going through a tough time or maybe you’re battling with a few things, you see these kinds of people, your leaders and others who just lift you up. Now Richy is going through a good spell, I’m sure there’s guys in there now who he’ll be giving a lift to as well because he understands how important it is.”
Postecoglou is not planning for the summer yet
Some might have wondered if Richarlison’s improved form might influence Postecoglou’s decision on whether to sign a centre-forward next summer, but the Spurs boss insisted that he has not thought that far forward.
When asked if the 26-year-old has now shown him that he can be the main man upfront for Tottenham over the long term, Postecoglou responded: “I’ve never thought in those terms because if you do, you box yourself in. What I want is for Richy to keep improving, and keep developing his football and becoming a real force for us and we’ll see where that takes us.
“Because as this year alone has shown us, whatever plans or designs I had about which kind of formation I was going to play and which players were going to play a part in that, that pretty much went out the window after the first 15 minutes at Brentford when Romero gets a concussion and I’ve got to make a change.
“I’ve never thought in those terms. For me, it’s about trying to get players to fulfil their potential and with Richy, I still think there is growth there. If it keeps growing, well we the football club will be the beneficiaries of it.”
Spurs Web Opinion
One can tell from the body language of the players that there is a real togetherness and family feel around the Tottenham squad at the minute. The fact that the club has empathetic leaders like Son and Maddison certainly helps in setting the tone for such an atmosphere.
