Genoa CEO Andres Blazquez has admitted that while Radu Dragusin would be a big loss to the side, the club needed to sell him in order to make the signings they wanted in January.
Dragusin had been earmarked as a prodigal talent from quite a young age, which is why Juventus (who were spearheaded by Fabio Paratici at the time) secured his services when he was just a teenager.
However, the Romanian did not get the opportunities he hoped for in Turin and had to move to Genoa in order to kickstart his career at the highest level.
The 21-year-old had played a key role in the club’s promotion to the Italian top flight last season and he was one of the standout centre-backs in the Serie A during the first half of this campaign, thus convincing Tottenham to shell out £26.7m to bring him to North London last month.
Spurs saw off competition from Bayern Munich to land the defender, with the player himself admitting that he saw the Lilywhites as the right step for him at this stage of his career (Independent).
Genoa are proud to sell to Tottenham Hotspur
Blazquez has now explained that Dragusin was Genoa’s most sellable asset, admitting that the offer that was made by Tottenham was one the club could not turn down.
The Italian club’s CEO told TuttoMercatoWeb about the centre-back’s sale: “We could not do anything until we freed up some salaries or sold a player. We were forced to sell in order to do something. We evaluated the player who had the most important market, in a position where we were better off, was Dragusin.
“He received a very important offer on a personal level and we on a corporate level. We tried to get as much as possible for him knowing that his position was best covered.
“We are happy with this transfer, of course we will miss Radu both on a personal and on a sporting level, he is a great professional but it is also a prestige to sell to a club like Tottenham having also had offers from Bayern. That says a lot about the job Spurs has done.”
Spurs Web Opinion
With Tottenham being out of the FA Cup and having pretty much just one game a week for almost the entirety of the rest of the season, Dragusin will have to be patient for the next few months as he is not likely to make starts unless there is an injury to one of Romero or Van de Ven.
We might not see the best of the Romanian at Tottenham until next season but he certainly has the right attributes to evolve into a top player under Ange Postecoglou.
