Cristian Romero has revealed that he has worked on his game to ensure he does not give away as many fouls or pick up as many cards.
While some Spurs fans will argue that Romero is not as dirty a player as his reputation suggests, there is no doubt that the Tottenham man is extremely aggressive on the pitch and is prone to the odd risky challenge.
The fact that he has been seen celebrating in the faces of opposition players a few times has perhaps not helped the way he is perceived.
The Tottenham vice-captain has now claimed that he has successfully cut out some of those kinds of excesses from his game.
Cristian Romero wants to improve his suspension record
The centre-back told Sky Sports: “I know it is an aspect of my game I need to work on and polish up a bit and improve. I was aware that I was picking up too many cards so I set out to work on it.
“Maybe it is down to my style of play, on many occasions protesting too much for clashing with someone, so in situations like this I think I’ve improved a great deal.”
Romero had the honour of lifting the biggest trophy in the game a little over a year ago, playing a key part in Argentina’s historic World Cup triumph in Qatar, and the centre-back admitted that he is determined to also leave a mark on Tottenham’s history by winning silverware at the club.
He added: “The key thing for us players, who spend a relatively short time here, it is to ensure we leave our mark and make our impression here. We do that by winning trophies.
“These things can take time because I don’t think you can just start winning trophies from one day to the next. But if the chairman and the club owners continue with the positive and important changes, we will get closer to being able to really compete with the very top clubs like Manchester City and Liverpool.”

Since his last red card offence back in November, Romero has noticeably cut back on dangerous tackles while still retaining his aggression and physicality.
That is a positive sign for Spurs as it suggests that the centre-back is coming of age and realising that he has to take more responsibility as one of the leaders of the side.
