Tottenham Hotspur suffered defeat last time out against Wolves, in a result which saw the Lilywhites slip out of the top four and put their hopes of Champions League qualification at risk. Judging by his latest comments, it’s safe to say Dejan Kulusevski is not happy with the way his side played.
Going into the weekend, Spurs were sitting in the top four with a one-point lead over Aston Villa in fifth. Ange Postecoglou‘s men were also on a five-game unbeaten run in the Premier League, so expectations were high that they could bag another win.
That was not the case, though, with Wolves proving to be a well-organised unit capable of preventing Tottenham from playing their preferred attacking football. Ultimately, it was Gary O’Neill’s men who used the counter-attack approach to sting Spurs and take all three points on Saturday.
Kulusevski unhappy with Wolves defeat
It’s a result which could prove costly this season, and Dejan Kulusevski, who got Spurs back into the game with an equaliser just after half-time, has vented his frustrations in a chat with The Standard after the game.
He said: “It’s the worst [feeling]. There’s nothing worse than losing, so it was very tough. We’re not playing good enough, we have to get better. We have two weeks now to work on that, and come back a bit better.
“[My goal] gave us hope, for sure. After that we played really well, had a lot of chances but didn’t score. Then [there was] not enough discipline when we lost the ball.
“They had two or three counter-attacks where we were not good enough, and then they made us pay. We were too many guys up front. We were too open and not running back as hard as maybe we should. They scored a couple, and that’s not good enough.”
Giving credit to the opponents, the Swede added: “This league is very hard. Every game if you’re not playing very well then it’s difficult to win. We knew Wolves were very good in their counter-attacks, so we should handle it much better.
“They defended with 10 guys. It’s difficult to find solutions. We just have to get better [in games and] in the training sessions. We did [get through] in the last minute, we had a great chance. We didn’t score, it happens, it’s football, but we move on.”
Spurs Web Opinion
We simply weren’t good enough on Saturday and Wolves absolutely had our number tactically, too. Hopefully, we can bounce back against Palace and get back in the hunt for the top four, especially with Villa coming up after that.
