Journalist Ben Jacobs has said Tottenham Hotspur might need to shatter their transfer record to sign Pedro Neto from Wolves in the summer.
While Neto has always been an exciting talent, the 23-year-old has taken his game to the next level this season, demonstrating in his side’s win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday just why he is now emerging as a target for some top clubs.
At the start of last week, The Sun claimed that Tottenham and Arsenal are ready to poach the winger when the transfer window reopens in June.
A couple of days ago, The Standard suggested Wolves may demand at least £60m if they are to let the Portugal international leave the club next summer.
Gary O’Neil was defiant about his star player’s future following his side’s win over Spurs on Saturday, insisting that the West Midlands side have no intention of letting the winger leave (Metro).
Pedro Neto may go for between £65m and £85m
Jacobs has now also named the two North London clubs as the ones leading the race for Neto, remarking that it might take a huge £85m offer to take the player away from the Molineux Stadium.
The journalist told GiveMeSport about the Wolves winger: “It will obviously depend on the payment terms and the structure, but there’s going to be nothing cut price because he’s well contracted at the football club. I think Spurs and Arsenal could be two to watch for the summer.
“I think that based upon other transfers in an inflated market at the moment, that kind of number [£65m] is relatively fair by Wolves. It doesn’t feel excessive. They might be well within their rights to be saying, given his form and the demand, they want, even in excess of £85m.
“Simply because other players in the market in the last few windows have gone for those kinds of amounts. But the starting point for suitors for Neto is going to be more around the £55m to £65m mark.”
Spurs Web Opinion
A lot of the transfer fees being reported right now are completely unrealistic, failing to take into account the fact that clubs are now operating in a new financial landscape, with the Premier League not afraid to punish those who do not comply with PSR rules.
The likes of Wolves and Brentford may find that they would have to settle for a much lower fee than they anticipated for Neto and Toney respectively.
