The Sun have explained that Tottenham Hotspur’s quest to qualify for next season’s Champions League would be aided if Arsenal overcome Porto and make it to the quarterfinal stage of the competition.
With the Champions League set to be expanded next season, an extra automatic qualification spot will be handed to two leagues, whose teams perform the best in the three European competitions this season.
However, with Newcastle United and Manchester United both exiting the premier club tournament in the group stages, it is explained that England now find themselves in third place before the knockout stages started.
Tottenham may rely on Arsenal for Champions League
Manchester City look set to advance to the next round after overcoming Copenhagen in their first leg last week and The Sun now claim that an Arsenal win over Porto will go a long way towards ensuring the fifth Champions League spot for the Premier League.
Spurs and Man Utd could thus find themselves in the horrible position of cheering on the Gunners. Those sides will also be hoping that Liverpool, Brighton and West Ham go deep into the Europa League and that Aston Villa do the same in the Conference League.
Spurs Web Opinion
The Premier League is likely to get the extra Champions League spot irrespective of how far Arsenal go in the competition this season. Man City are one of the favourites to win the tournament while one would also bet on one of the three English clubs winning the Europa League.
Unai Emery also has a great record in European competitions and Villa will fancy their chances of getting their hands on the Conference League title.
