Dean Jones has said that Tottenham Hotspur are prioritising signing another winger over a centre-forward during the summer transfer window.
Various outlets, including Football Insider, have reported over recent weeks that Spurs are expected to be one of the biggest spenders again next summer, with a number nine said to be at the top of their agenda.
The publication suggested that the Lilywhites are looking for a marquee number nine to fill Harry Kane’s shoes, with Brentford’s Ivan Toney being one of the players on their wishlist.
Meanwhile, the North London club also continue to be linked with various wingers, with the likes of Wolves’ Pedro Neto (The Sun) and Barcelona’s Raphinha (Sport) thought to be on the radar of Ange Postecoglou’s side.
Tottenham are not obsessed with finding a striker
Jones has now alleged a winger is at the top of Tottenham’s agenda, with the club relatively happy for Richarlison and Son Heung-min to continue leading the line next season.
The journalist told GiveMeSport: “They are definitely in the market for a winger, more than they are in the market for a striker at this moment in time.
“I’m told that they will be happy for Richarlison and Heung-min Son to continue competing for that central role, and then they just want good variations around them.
“Obviously, they have got options right now, but it is very much up in the air whether Timo Werner will stay or not. You would probably err on the side of not, at the moment. Either way, I think Tottenham still might look to get somebody else in for the longer term.”
Spurs Web Opinion
While I do expect Tottenham to sign a centre-forward next summer, it is unlikely to be a big-name signing like Toney. It will probably be a younger player who could perhaps rotate with Richarlison and continue developing into the finished product.
The club’s decision could also be influenced by how Alejo Veliz does on loan at Sevilla. If the Argentine impresses, Postecoglou might perhaps decide to use him as a backup next season.
