Hugo Lloris admitted that he felt Tottenham Hotspur might have been successful if they had invested more into the squad around 2017 but acknowledged that the club were focused on building the stadium at the time.
Some Spurs fans will still be scratching their head about how Tottenham failed to win a single trophy under Mauricio Pochettino.
The Lilywhites were beaten to the Premier League title by Leicester City and Chelsea in successive seasons before falling one step short of European glory a couple of years later as Liverpool beat them in the Champions League final.
The most complete team they had was arguably during the 2016-17 campaign, which was the final season at White Hart Lane, with Pochettino’s men winning 17 and drawing two of their 19 home league games that season.
Tottenham needed to spend during the peak Pochettino years
Lloris admitted Spurs needed a couple of marquee additions at the end of that campaign if they were to win some major honours.
The former Tottenham captain told The Athletic: “Under Pochettino, you could see the progression year after year, and we were very competitive. We were close to winning. I think at the time, we missed two or three more players to compete for success and for him to win trophies.
“Our progression was too fast for the club because, at that time, they were focused on the new stadium. They did not have the financial reserve as they do now. At that time, we needed to add a few players and regenerate that group of players.
“When I felt we were most capable of winning a trophy, we had to move to Wembley. The year before at White Hart Lane, we finished unbeaten. We won 17 games and drew two; it was a big record.
“At that time, we thought if we stayed at White Hart Lane, we could match the same tally of points, but we moved to Wembley — a different environment and stadium. We had to deal with that for a year and a half. Even with that, we managed to get into the top four.”
Lloris revealed that some of his motivation was drained during his final few years at the club but he refused to point the finger at Daniel Levy for the club’s inability to get over the line and win silverware.
The 37-year-old added: “In the last few years, I had less energy than in the past because we pushed every day, year after year, and never got the reward. It was like we arrived, and we were still trying to push, but we didn’t have the same energy as before to go all the way. Every time we faced this difficulty as a club, it was like we were struggling.
“It’s easy from outside or as a player to say (Levy) should do this or do that. The reality is different. When you’re at the top of the club, you’re always interested in trying to make the best decisions.
“When you blame him because we did not win trophies, well, he brought some huge names, and it didn’t work. And then you look at the last two or three transfer markets; the club is very active. Right now, the club is in a strong position.”

Lloris’ point about Tottenham’s progression under Pochettino being too fast for the club’s own good is quite interesting.
By the time we moved into the new stadium in 2019 and the club decided to back Pochettino in a major way, it seemed like the Argentine and the Spurs squad had already become disillusioned with the lack of success.
