Tottenham Hotspur have developed a very distinct style of play this season, particularly when it comes to their approach in attacking areas. However, in training today, Alasdair Gold spotted something a little different.
Ange Postecoglou has wasted no time in establishing the way he wants his Spurs side to play football. Since taking over as manager last summer, the Australian coach has got his players committed to attacking, expansive football, and has instilled a hunger for goals among the team.
A key trademark of this approach has been the way his players feed the ball down the wing and into the box, with low, driven crosses the order of the day; something Richarlison in particular has really benefitted from.
If things are working, why change? Well, it’s always good to have new ideas and be able to mix things up, and that appears to be something Postecoglou has asked of his side in training today.
Spurs trying different crossing techniques
As per a report from Football.London‘s Alasdair Gold, something a little different happened in training, and the plan seemed to work pretty well, too.
Gold wrote: “There was a slight departure from that [low cross approach] with one moment in training as Rodrigo Bentancur hit a pass out wide where [Jamie] Donley tapped it into the path of captain Son Heung-min.
“The South Korean star looked up to see Brennan Johnson racing in and delivered a perfect cross for the Wales international to leap towards. The 22-year-old connected with a fine volley sending it into the net via the inside of the right-hand post with goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario left in no-man’s land.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It will be interesting to see whether this is something we use in games or if it’s just a little experiment for training purposes. Either way, it’s surely a good thing to have a range of different deliveries in our locker, to keep opponents guessing.
