Jermaine Jenas has revealed that on his first night out with the Tottenham squad after arriving at the North London club in 2008, Luka Modric passed out in a toilet cubicle and had to be carried home.
Modric is now one of the most recognisable footballers on the planet and is one of the game’s biggest superstars, having been the heartbeat of the Real Madrid side for over a decade.
At Tottenham, the midfielder first hit the limelight, developing into one of the best in the Premier League following his move from Dinamo Zagreb to White Hart Lane.
The Croat was part of an entertaining Spurs team under Harry Redknapp and completely dictated proceedings each time he stepped out on the pitch.
Luka Modric’s first Tottenham night out
While Modric might have been untouchable on the field, Jenas has revealed that the diminutive midfielder could not hack it on his first night out with the squad during pre-season, narrating how he passed out in a toilet cubicle.
The 41-year-old said on That Peter Crouch Podcast: “We had a night out and it’s the first time you get to see a glimpse into who they [new signings] are as people.
“Oh my god. He went on one Luka. All the Croatian boys were class to be fair, but they loved a drink. Anyway, I get a tap on the shoulder, not even late, about 10 pm going ‘J, we need your help’.
“I’ve gone into some cubical and Luka is basically sleeping by the toilet and his Rolex has come flying off his wrist and I’ve had to go grab that. In the end, the bouncer just stuck him on his shoulder and we all took him home and put him to bed.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It is interesting to see just how much the game has changed in the last decade and a half due to the increasing influence of sports science.
I doubt many modern-day players will have night outs like these in pre-season, given the crucial fitness and conditioning work that goes on before the start of every campaign.
