Tottenham Hotspur delivered a stunning win over top-four rivals Aston Villa today, and James Maddison has praised the way his team worked hard to overcome the opposition in a huge victory.
Going into today’s game, it was clear that this was a must-win situation for both sides. If Villa could secure the three points, it would become very difficult for Spurs to catch them in fourth place, but if Ange Postecoglou‘s side could get the win, the race for Champions League qualification would be flipped on its head.
Many fans and pundits expected a high-scoring game, but no one would have predicted the way Spurs absolutely dominated Villa on their way to a surprise 4-0 win at Villa Park.
The game was firmly in Tottenham’s control by the 53rd minute, after a quickfire double from James Maddison and Brennan Johnson put the away side ahead.
Then, in injury time, goals from Heung-min Son and Timo Werner turned a good win into an incredible one.
Hard work paid off for Tottenham
Speaking to Sky Sports (via the BBC) after the game James Maddison discussed the importance of the win and how the side had prepared for that kind of performance all week.
He said: “It feels as big as any other three points but we knew there would be a lot on today’s game just because of the nature of the league table. [I’m] really happy, you see the celebrations because we work all week. We had a game plan and we came away with three points with a convincing win.
“It’s a common theme in our game, we score a lot of goals late on. The message was to keep doing the same thing because they won’t be able to keep up. We blew them away at the start of the second half.
When commenting on what this win can mean for Spurs, Maddison replied: “Game-by-game, sorry for the boring cliché answer. That’s all you can do. you have to focus on winning the game.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I hoped Spurs could win today, but never in my wildest dreams did I think we would obliterate Villa like that. The fact we scored four goals away from home is amazing, and the clean sheet is brilliant too, as Villa have been hard to handle for most teams this year.
