Rodrigo Bentacnur has revealed that Ange Postecoglou has prioritised creating a real family feel at the club, insisting that the squad is now extremely tightly-knit.

At times last season, it did seem as if all was not positive within the Tottenham changing room, with the situation perhaps not helped by Antonio Conte’s tendency to publicly criticise his players.

Based on the body language of the players this season, it does appear as if the squad is now much closer and genuinely invested in each other’s success, with Bentancur revealing that the change is down to Postecoglou.

The midfielder told Sky Sports: “I would say we already had a good team spirit but he has strengthened the idea of being a family, and that we are all brothers,” he continues.

“Ange has been really keen to instil that, so the group is now very united. We are a young team, around 24 or 25 on average, and we all get along very well. He has created a great atmosphere.”

Competition for places at Tottenham Hotspur

Creating a family atmosphere at the club can be a challenge when there is a lot of competition for places and nowhere is it more stringent than in the middle of the park, but Bentancur insisted that the competition helps bring the best out of him and his teammates.

He said: “It’s healthy competition and it helps us all to improve as individuals. This year, going out of the cup competitions means we have only had the Premier League.

“But the idea is to have this same level of competition when we are hopefully playing in Europe again next season and we have more games. We will need everyone in the squad to be at 100 per cent.”

Bentancur has been used as a number six and a number eight by Postecoglou and the former Juventus man insisted that he enjoys playing either role.

When asked what his favourite position is, he responded: “When I returned from the second injury, I started as the No 6 because Bissou was with his national team Now that he is back, I’m playing more as the right-sided No 8.

“I’m feeling better and better physically, and I think I am at the point now where I can start to play in both positions. I think Ange and the coaching staff have seen that as well, so I just keep working. I am always available to play wherever I am asked.”

“I know that above all I am a tactical and positional player but being a bit freer to attack feels very good. I am trying to copy the work Pape does in the position a little bit. He does it very well and that is what the manager wants from his No 8s, so I’m working on that.”

This sort of family feel among the squad can only be achieved if the club are extremely careful to bring the right sort of personalities through the door. It is not surprising that Ange puts a lot of weight on the character and personality of the transfer targets rather than just their abilities.
