Gabby Agbonlahor believes that signing Morgan Gibbs-White would prove a masterstroke for Tottenham Hotspur, insisting that the Nottingham Forest star would significantly improve the Spurs squad.
Gibbs-White has progressed impressively since his move to Forest a couple of years ago and amidst the club’s financial crisis, it has been suggested that he could be sacrificed this summer.
It was reported by talkSPORT two weeks ago that the Midlands club might have to offload the midfielder to avoid further sanctions and that Tottenham are keeping tabs on the player’s situation.
The same information was subsequently backed up by The Telegraph, who said that Forst would have to sell the 24-year-old by June 30 and that the club valued the player at around £50m.
Morgan Gibbs-White to Tottenham Hotspur?
Agbonlahor believes that Gibbs-White is just the kind of player Spurs need to sign ahead of their potential return to the Champions League next season.
When asked if the midfielder could play for a top-four side, the former Aston Villa striker told talkSPORT: “100 per cent. I see a team that suits him, Spurs. You look at [James] Maddison being brought off in a few games recently and they’re bringing on [Giovani] Lo Celso who’s decent, imagine having that power next season.
“Champions League football, and you’re bringing on Gibbs-White and you’re rotating him in that position. I think he offers everything, first touch, can score a goal, can pick a pass out, he’s got that flair.
“Like we said earlier, that assist in the previous game against [Crystal] Palace to Chris Wood, the defenders didn’t even see that pass. Just a little dink onto Chris Wood’s head, a straight pass as well.
“I think he’s got it all and Nottingham Forest might be in a position at the end of the season where they have to sell someone like Gibbs-White.”
Agbonlahor suggested that Forest might want a bigger fee for the midfielder than they did for Brennan Johnson last summer but pointed out that the club’s financial situation could see the former Wolves man be sold at a discount.
When asked how much he thought Gibbs-White was worth, the pundit replied: “I think minimum £50million, I think maybe a bit more. Brennan Johnson was what, was he £50 million? He’s better than him, so you’re probably talking more.
“Forest are going to want top dollar for him but if they’re under pressure to sell, clubs will know that and maybe offer less than £40 million because Forest have to sell someone for financial fair play. “But I don’t think he goes to a top four club and then looks out of place, I think he fits it, top player.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I get the feeling that Conor Gallagher is still Postecoglou’s top target for the number eight role, although one can make a persuasive case that Gibbs-White is a more talented player than the Chelsea man.
