Michael Dawson has said Jermaine Jenas did not get the love and appreciation he deserved from Spurs fans, insisting that the midfielder was extremely well-rounded.
Jenas made more than 200 appearances for Tottenham and won 21 caps for England and while he delivered some outstanding performances for both club and country, he never quite had the consistency to be talked about in the same breath as other top players of his era.
The midfielder split the Spurs fan base in his early years at the club his number of detractors grew considerably in his final few years at White Hart Lane.
Jenas certainly had plenty of bright moments at Tottenham, playing a key role in the club’s 2008 League Cup win with outstanding displays in the semifinal and final against Arsenal and Chelsea respectively.
Jermaine Jenas deserves more Tottenham respect
Dawson believes that the 40-year-old was quite similar to Pape Sarr, given the engine and all-around game that he possessed.
The former Spurs centre-back told Off The Shelf Podcast: “I knew JJ from his Forest days, he was the one everyone wanted to be like. What a player, he could play centre-half, midfield, he was class, he had everything.
“He was probably a player Spurs fans didn’t appreciate as much as they should have done. His engine up and down, in both boxes he was magnificent, a bit like Pape does.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I was actually a fan of JJ but I was quite clearly in the minority at the time. One can understand why fans got quite frustrated with the midfielder as even though he possessed an abundance of quality, he never quite managed to fulfil his potential.
There was also a feeling that he always played safe rather than looking to pass the forward, which I felt was a little unfair.
