Benoit Assou-Ekotto has revealed that he always used to take the tube during his time at Tottenham instead of travelling by car.
Assou-Ekotto certainly was not your typical professional footballer and was a bit of a maverick during his time at White Hart Lane, which is one of the reasons why the fan base loved him.
The left-back openly confessed to not being a fan of football, stating in an interview with The Guardian back in 2010 that to him the sport was little more than a job.
He had even revealed that he was not even aware of who Rafael van de Vaart was when Tottenham signed him from Real Madrid in 2010 (Daily Star).
The Cameroonian often did not know which side Spurs were facing next, admitting to The Athletic previously that he couldn’t even tell the difference between West Ham and Aston Villa.
Assou-Ekotto used to take the tube at Spurs
The former Tottenham man has now confessed that he often used to take the tube during his time in London, admitting that he was bewildered why other footballers did not do the same.
The 40-year-old said on YouTube show Carton Jaune (as relayed by Sport Witness): “If you play in London… I’ll give you an example. I spoke with a player and asked him when you’re in front of this tube station, do you go left or right? He told me: ‘I don’t know where that tube station is’.
“I ask him if he ever takes the tube and he says, ‘No, just the car, always’. And so I ask him when it’s 5 pm and you’re in the car for an hour but the tube trip would take you 10 minutes, he said ‘yes’.
“Me, personally, I never took the car in London, and you’re not a footballer, you take the tube, people don’t clock you. There’s so many clubs in London, the guy in front of you could support QPR, and the other supports Chelsea. They don’t clock you, you’re almost just another guy.”

Assou-Ekotto was certainly cut from a different cloth from most footballers and often spoke and behaved like a normal person rather than a celebrity. One could not question the left-back’s commitment whenever he stepped out onto the field as he always gave 100 per cent for the shirt.
