Nuno Espirito Santo has admitted that he was saddened by the way his stint at Tottenham panned out but insisted that he drew some important lessons from his time in North London.
Nuno lasted just four months in the Spurs hot seat after replacing Jose Mourinho in the summer of 2021, with the Portuguese coach making way for Antonio Conte in November of the same year after a poor start to the season.
Two and a half years on, the 50-year-old is set to return to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the first time as the manager of Forest.

However, rather than proving a point to his former employers, he insisted that his focus is on his team’s own objectives and their quest to stay in the Premier League.
When asked about getting one over Spurs, Nuno said (via Nottingham Post): “More important is the situation we are in and that we need to keep putting points on the table. That is more important for all of us.
“It is going to be a pleasure to return, to play there and to face Spurs. It is part of the past now, I am focused on Forest and am determined to try to achieve a good performance.”
Nuno insisted that even though things did not go according to plan for him in his brief stay at Tottenham, he is a better coach due to that experience.
He continued: “I have learned from all moments of my life and all the experiences I have had. They (Spurs) are some also.
“I started managing in 2011 or 2012. From all the experiences I have had, there was always some learning to take from them – and that was no exception. The moment was a sad moment, but life keeps on going.”
The Forest boss is under no illusions about the difficulty of the task that his side face on Sunday.
Speaking about the challenge, he said: “Spurs are a team full of very talented players, with a good manager. They are in a good moment. It is going to be hard.”

In many ways, Nuno was set up to fail at Tottenham. Not only was he appointed quite late after it had become public that Spurs had failed with moves for many other managers, but he also had to deal with the fallout from Kane’s failed move to Man City.
The Portugese coach perhaps did not do himself any favours with the way he treated the fringe players but those few bad months at Spurs do not make him a bad manager. He is fully deserving of this opportunity at Forest, given the excellent work he did at Wolves.
