Micahel Dawson has admitted that he hated training against Jermain Defoe, revealing that the former Tottenham striker was always hungry for goals.
Defoe is one of Tottenham’s biggest legends of the Premier League era, with the striker scoring 143 goals in 363 appearances for the Lilywhites across two spells (Transfermarkt).
The 41-year-old, who hung up his boots in 2022, is considered by many to be one of the most naturally gifted finishers of the modern era.
The Spurs legend now works as an academy coach at Hotspur Way, imparting his experience and know-how to the young strikers coming through the system at the club.
Dawson, who shared a dressing room with a former England man for over a decade, admitted that the striker was a nightmare to train against.
Michael Dawson hated training against Jermain Defoe
The centre-back trained with some extremely talented strikers at Spurs, including Dimitar Berbatov, Robbie Keane and later Emmanuel Adebayor, but he named Defoe as the one who was the most difficult to go up against.
Dawson told Off The Shelf Podcast: “Do you know why I’m going with this player, it’s because ultimately he was a goalscorer. It was all about him if he didn’t score and if he scored five he wanted to score six. Whenever I trained against him he was a nightmare. What a player, what a goalscorer, Jermain Defoe.”

One can certainly understand why Dawson would have difficulties marking Defoe, who had a low centre of gravity and was quite sharp, being able to quickly manufacture half a yard and get a shot away on goal.
