The Times have revealed that when he was appointed as the captain of Tottenham, Son Heung-min asked all his teammates for suggestions on their pre-match routines as he was keen to find new ways to make a difference.
After Harry Kane’s departure last summer and Hugo Lloris being relegated to a peripheral role (before his eventual departure in January), Son seemed the obvious choice for the captaincy.
However, The Times point out that the decision was not an easy one for Ange Postecoglou, who along with Daniel Levy had decided that the club needed to go in a new direction.
Son was seen as a continuity candidate, which presented a bit of a contradiction, given that the new Tottenham boss was trying to bring about change.
However, the outlet explains that Postecoglou saw the forward as someone who could knit his team together due to his ability to move easily between the various cliques in the dressing room.
Heung-min Son’s impact as Tottenham captain
The Times claim that since being given the armband, Son has been ‘relentless in trying to find ways to make a difference’ for the Spurs side.
At the start of the campaign, the 31-year-old is alleged to have surveyed the entire Tottenham squad about all the details of the team’s existing routines.
The South Korean is said to have asked for the input of all the players on questions like whether they should sleep at the training ground the night before matches, what they should wear to away games and when they should travel by bus or their own cars.
The report further confirms what we have heard from other sources by revealing that Son texted James Maddison the night before the club’s opening day of the season against Brentford with the idea of doing the pre-match huddle close to the travelling fans, which is a practice that has persisted so far.
Spurs Web Opinion
While I have always absolutely adored Sonny, I did not see him as a natural leader as I felt he was perhaps a bit too nice and pally with his teammates.
However, I have been pleasantly surprised by the different side we have seen of him this season. The 31-year-old has demonstrated that he can be extremely demanding of his teammates while also retaining the empathy and compassion that makes him so likeable.
