Danny Murphy has said that while Timo Werner has made a positive impact at Tottenham Hotspur, the North London club should be looking to sign a winger of a higher calibre in the summer.
Werner never really looked at home in his previous stint at English football with Chelsea but from the day he arrived at Spurs in January, the German has looked comfortable in Ange Postecoglou’s system.
The 28-year-old has been a regular in the Lilywhites’ starting eleven and has proven a handful for opposition defences, given his directness and pace.
The on-loan RB Leipzig man delivered another excellent display in Tottenham’s 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest, being a liverwire all game and getting some dangerous crosses into the box.
It was one such cross that Murillo put into his own net to give the home side the lead in the 15th minute and Murphy opined that Werner and Brennan Johnson were Tottenham’s best players on the day.
The pundit told BBC’s Match of the Day (via HITC): “In the end, Brennan Johnson and Timo Werner were the difference. “He’s been clever signing! A cute signing.”
Football.London’s Alasdair Gold suggested on Monday that on the back of Werner’s latest showing, the Spurs hierarchy could give the green light for the £15m option to buy to be activated in the summer.
Danny Murphy thinks Spurs should aim higher than Werner
However, Murphy is not entirely sold on that idea, suggesting that there are better options on the market that Postecoglou’s men should be looking at.
When asked if Tottenham should activate the option to buy Werner, the former England midfielder said: “It depends on the budget and what you’ve got moving forward.
“I think there is better out there depending on what you’ve got to spend and what you want to prioritise. I think it was a great gap filler and he’s done OK. But you want more goals from your wide-men. He doesn’t score enough for me.”
Spurs Web Opinion
While Werner may not be particularly clinical in front of goal, his goal return is not bad for a wide player. Tottenham would certainly not be able to find anyone of similar value for £15m, which is why it is a no-brainer for the club to activate the option to buy.
