Mark Lawrenson has backed Tottenham Hotspur to emerge with all three points from St James’ Park, given Newcastle’s weaknesses at the back.
The memories of last season’s 6-1 thrashing will still be relatively fresh on the minds of Spurs fans, with Newcastle dismantling Cristian Stellini-managed Lilywhites side in the same fixture.
There is no do doubt that Tottenham are now a much better side than they were 12 months ago but Ange Postecoglou’s men have not exactly covered themselves in glory away from home off late.
The Spurs head coach will thus see this afternoon’s clash as a big test against a side that finished fourth last season. Eddie Howe’s men have also been plagued by inconsistency over recent weeks and have been involved in several high-scoring fixtures.
Newcastle vs Tottenham score prediction
Lawrenson has backed the North London club to edge out their opponents, given the players that the Magpies are currently without.
He told Paddy Power: This is a biggie, it should be a good game. I’m going to go for Spurs because of the way they play and the fact that Newcastle are not great at the back. They concede a lot of goals and they’ve got plenty of injuries. Newcastle 1-2 Tottenham.”
Spurs Web Opinion
With Villa travelling to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, Spurs have a golden opportunity to build up a three-point lead in fourth place with a game in hand and put themselves in the driving seat for Champions League qualification.
However, Newcastle is a tough place to go and Tottenham will have to be at their best to emerge with all three points.
