Rafael van der Vaart has admitted that listening to fans incorporate his famous chant for Micky van de Ven gives him goosebumps and has brought back fond memories of his time in N17.
Some players are just born to play for Spurs and instantly connect with the fans as soon as they join the club, which was the case with Van der Vaart when he arrived at White Hart Lane from Real Madrid in 2010.
The supporters loved the attacking flair and the passion that the Dutchman played with and it did not take them long for them to come up with an iconic chant for the midfielder.
Van der Vaart loves Micky’s new song
Van der Vaart’s song is based on KC and the Sunshine Band’s hit from the early 1980s, Give It Up, and one would constantly hear that being sung home and away during his time at the club.
Spurs supporters have now repurposed the same song for Van de Ven, who like the midfielder, is quickly becoming a fan favourite at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
When asked about fans signing his song for his compatriot, Van der Vaart has now told the club’s official website: “I got goosebumps… but he’s stolen my song! I’ll never forget the fans singing Rafa van der Vaart, van der Vaart, Rafa van de Vaart, na, na-na, na-na, na-na, na, na… it’s so nice.
“It brought back memories, wow, as I said, goosebumps. I know how that feels to be flying at Spurs. I remember the fans used to sing that for me, now for him. The fans are special, you know that. I still really love them.”
Spurs Web Opinion
The fact that Spurs fans have given such an iconic song reserved for a legend to Van de Ven is a testament to the impact the centre-back has made at the club in such a short space of time. Hopefully, he remains at Tottenham for quite a bit longer than Van der Vaart did.
