Leeds United have received a body blow in their attempt to secure Joe Rodon permanently from Tottenham Hotspur after failing to win promotion to the Premier League.
Rodon has had an exceptional season on loan at Leeds but the centre-back and his teammates could not do enough to ensure that the club secured an automatic promotion spot, finishing in third place.
They thus had to rely on the playoffs to bounce straight back up and things looked promising for them when they overcame Norwich City 4-0 comfortably in the playoff semifinals to set up a final clash with Southampton.
However, Daniel Farke’s men fell short in the final at Wembley, with a 24th-minute striker from Adam Armstrong ensuring that it is the Saints who will be in the Premier League this season.
Leeds United suffer blow in Joe Rodon pursuit
It has been widely reported over the last few months that Leeds are battling multiple Premier League sides for Rodon’s signature this summer, with the 26-year-old allegedly valued at around £12m- £15m (TEAMtalk).
After learning that they will be spending another year in the Championship, the club’s quest to complete a deal for the Tottenham man just got a lot harder.

Not only would Leeds find it difficult to convince Rodon, who is likely to be of interest to top-flight clubs, but they will also struggle to afford a deal for the centre-back, now that they will not be getting the additional revenue that promotion would have brought.
