We were kicked out and barred from Wetherspoons for celebrating the coronation – it’s a disgrace

A PENSIONER and his wife have slammed “killjoy” Wetherspoons staff after they were kicked out and barred for blowing paper horns while celebrating the Coronation. 

Retired truck driver Peter Noah, 74, and ex-nurse Kathleen, 75, have been going to the same pub with their four friends every Saturday for a decade. 

But they were horrified when they were all asked to leave The Obediah Brooke, in Cleckheaton, West Yorks, as they enjoyed the royal spectacle. 

The OAP’s had brought with them small four-inch paper horns emblazoned with Union Jacks. 

Peter said: “The whole pub was celebrating and everyone was in great spirits. 

“We had these tiny paper trumpets and would blow them occasionally when King Charles was on the screen. 

“Others in the pub had Prince William masks on and everyone was having an amazing time.”

At around 6.30pm, the female deputy manager walked over and confiscated the horns, telling the pensioners: “You can have these back when you leave.”

Peter said: “It seemed a bit harsh as we were hardly causing trouble.

“At no point were we asked to stop blowing them either, but we thought that was the end of it. 

“Then the security guard, who we know quite well, apologised and said he’d been asked to tell us to leave. 

“We were gobsmacked. We’re a group of pensioners, not hooligans. 

“I spoke to the male manager who said we’d been warned about the horns six times. 

“That’s just simply not true. Nobody had said anything to us – they’re not even loud.”

The group had been in the pub for around three hours when they were asked to vacate the premises. 

The security guard let them finish their drinks before they moved to a pub round the corner. 

Peter said: “One minute we were having a laugh and a joke, and the next I’m barred from my regular. 

“The manager said I called him a w****r too, which simply did not happen. I don’t use that kind of language.

“I don’t understand, you’d think Wetherspoons would be fully behind the Coronation.

“The whole nation was celebrating but they were total killjoys. 

“It wasn’t the bar staff – we know them well and we go so often they’re now friends of ours.

“Nobody should be treated this way, especially not on such a momentous occasion.

“We’d been really looking forward to the day but it did put a dampener on things.”

Reveller James Patterson, who witnessed what happened, complained about how the pensioners were treated on Facebook. 

He said: “So Wetherspoons, Cleckheaton, have barred a group of local people for celebrating the Coronation!

“The group are in their sixties and seventies, ffs. 

“Who in their right mind would bar a group of retired royalists on the day of the King’s Coronation?”

It was shared over 300 times, sparking outrage from locals. 

Kimberley Wadsworth responded: “I was in there and they did nothing wrong and weren’t loud or rude.”

Angie Brook commented: “We are British. Get a grip, we know how to celebrate.” 

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “The customers were politely asked, on several occasions, to stop blowing their trumpets in the pub. 

“We appreciate that they may have wished to celebrate the Coronation but the repeated noise was causing disturbance to the staff and other customers. 

“When they refused the final request, and in the process used abusive language towards the manager on duty, they were asked to leave the premises.”
