PLAN ON PLANTS
Anne Colby, the U.S. editor of Houzz, shares her top tips for upgrading your home on a budget.
Houzz is the leading platform for home remodeling and design, including project management software for industry professionals.
Colby and her team know just how to add some posh elements to your home without the shocking price tag.
“Designers on Houzz agree — incorporating plants, both indoors and outdoors, is one of the most affordable ways to revitalize a space if you’re on a shoestring budget,” she said.
And that’s not the only reason she is a proponent for incorporating plants into your space.
“Plants can improve your air quality and even boost your mood. Of course, plants require some TLC, but if you have limited natural light or you’re not good with plant care, don’t worry,” she said.
“There are many low-maintenance options such as succulents or snake plants that can thrive in any home environment,” she added.
Whether you want to add a “statement-making sculptural element” that can work within your home or brighten up a small balcony, plants can become a fun focal point.
LET THERE BE LIGHT
Another easy way to save money while adding some style to your space is replacing your light fixtures.
Colby points to the 2024 Houzz & Home Study which found that homeowners are already starting to realize just how much new light fixtures can revitalize a home.
“It’s one of the most popular purchases among renovating homeowners,” she said.
“According to design professionals on Houzz, lighting trends change every five to ten years,” she added.
“Changing out your light fixtures is an economical, efficient way to reflect what’s current and update the look of your living space.”
Aside from adding a chic component to a room, lighting can help set the mood and “enhance the ambiance.”
MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL
Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the chicest of them all?
According to Anne, mirrors are a “versatile decorating accessory” that add both function and fashion.
Available in a range of shapes and sizes, there is something for all tastes and price ranges – and that’s not all.
“Well-placed mirrors can visually expand a room and make the most of its natural light,” she said.

CHIC COVER-UP
She also advises adding a wow factor to your home by getting creative with wall coverings.
“Refreshing your walls is another low-cost way to transform your space,” she said.
Adding a pop of fresh paint can also bring some “new energy” to a room.
Adding an accent wall can make for one very fashionable focal point.
Interior design commitment-phobes can still upgrade their decor by choosing from an array of temporary wall designs such as wall stencils, stamped wall patterns, and removable wall decals.
This is also ideal for renters and those homeowners who are reluctant to commit to changes.
“You can still add character to a space without worrying about damages or a long-term commitment,” she said.
“Consider incorporating beadboard paneling or 3D wall panels as another layer of interest,” she added.

Retail giant Amazon sells affordable $9.99 floral art wall decals that are ideal for any room, from a bedroom to a living room, as well as a nursery, and beyond.

TIMELESS TRENDS
Timeless style also never goes out of style.
She explains that Houzz is seeing a major trend amongst homeowners requesting traditional details and materials to create a an aura of classic and timeless design.
During renovations, this can be both cost-saving and sustainable.
“By choosing timeless design features such as brick, handmade clay tiles, and wood cabinetry, you can stay on-trend for years to come -and save money over time.”
