I was sacked by Netanyahu’s WIFE – my row with Lord Cameron was hyped-up nonsense, says ex-Israel spokesman Eylon Levy

EYLON Levy has rubbished claims he was ousted from his government spokesman post over his online spat with David Cameron.

London-born Levy, 33, said it was instead because Benjamin Netanyahu‘s wife demanded he be given the boot over his past criticism of her husband.

Mr Levy put the record straight as he appeared on The Sun’s Never Mind the Ballots, due to air tonight at 7pm on The Sun’s YouTube channel and thesun.co.uk.

Political Editor Harry Cole also grilled Labour’s shadow health secretary Wes Streeting for tonight’s no-holds-barred show.

In March, it was reported Mr Levy had been suspended from the Israeli government over comments he made on social media.

He replied to a post by UK Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron that urged Israel “to allow more [aid] trucks into Gaza.”

Mr Levy responded: “I hope you are also aware there are NO limits on the entry of food, water, medicine, or shelter equipment into Gaza, and in fact the crossings have EXCESS capacity.

“Test us. Send another 100 trucks a day to Kerem Shalom, and we’ll get them in.”

Mr Levy – who started as a spokesman for the government in the wake of the deadly October 7 assault – had written a post two days earlier criticising a statement by Lord Cameron.

But Mr Levy has claimed it was a different reason he was dismissed – Israeli PM Netanyahu’s wife Sara wanted him gone.

He said Mrs Netanyahu wanted him out as he had joined in protests against the judicial overhaul of the government last year, and over his previous social media posts attacking her husband.

Mr Levy said: “[This] story that has far more to do with domestic Israeli politics than the British press picked up.

“In Israel, it was widely reported in the middle of January that the Prime Minister’s wife wanted me removed from my position because I’d been active in protesting against this government, against its judicial reform plans, over the summer.”

He said his jibes at Lord Cameron on social media had been “sensationalised”.

Mr Levy, who was born to Israeli parents and moved to Israel in 2014, added: “The Israeli media made a mountain out of a molehill and sensationalised something that was very innocuous.

“I had replied to Lord Cameron on Twitter about the question of humanitarian aid.

“I understand someone in the foreign office sent a WhatsApp to someone in Israel asking whether my tweets criticising the foreign secretary or replying to him were reflective of Israeli government policy.”

In a separate interview today in America, Lord Cameron urged for more aid to be sent to Gaza.

He told Morning Joe: “We need more aid. We need to avoid a famine in Gaza. But of course, we should continue to support the idea that, you know, Hamas leaders cannot stay in Gaza.

“We can’t expect Israel to live next to a terrorist state.”

Watch Never Mind the Ballots

WES Streeting will be facing questions from Sun readers during a no holds barred guest spot on our new politics show tonight at 7pm.

You’ve been submitting your questions all week for Labour’s shadow health secretary – and he’ll answer them in hours.

Our weekly show also features opinions and insight from our very own panel boasting real-life experience, discussing what readers want from the next Government.

You can watch it on thesun.co.uk and The Sun’s YouTube channel.

And you can help set the agenda – by submitting your questions via email at readerquestions@the-sun.co.uk.

Tonight’s show will also see Mr Levy insist Israel won’t stop until Hamas is defeated despite Joe Biden telling Netanyahu he’s making a “mistake”.

He said the war had become a “problem they [the US] would like to wish away” as he rebuked the US President‘s comments.

A widening rift has been growing between the two staunch allies as Biden’s support of Israel’s war against Hamas appears to wane.

The most serious disagreement has been over Israel’s plans for an offensive in the southernmost Gaza city of Rafah.

Relations were worsened last week by an Israeli airstrike that killed seven charity workers. Israel said the deaths were unintentional but Biden was outraged.

In an interview recorded two days later, Biden branded Israel’s actions in Gaza a “mistake”.

Israel is going to continue going after Hamas, doing everything it can to bring back the hostages.

But Mr Levy dismissed Biden’s remarks, saying Israel would plough on with its mission to take down Hamas in revenge for the deadly October 7 assault.

He told Never Mind The Ballots: “Israel is going to continue going after Hamas, doing everything it can to bring back the hostages.

“We know Hamas and Islamic jihad are executing the hostages, starving them, torturing them, raping them, and we’re not going to allow that to continue.”

Mr Levy accused Biden of “throwing Israel under a bus” as the presidential election nears.

He added: “I don’t think anyone expected this war to last quite as long as it has.

“Unfortunately now we’re entering well into the American presidential calendar, the war has become more than a distraction.

“It’s become a political problem for President Biden, who is now coming under increasing pressure from the left of his party.”
