I tested all the supermarket doughnuts against major brand Krispy Kreme – the winner cost just 35p & had loads of icing
WHETHER you dunk, chew or share, scoffing a round doughnut is always a treat.
In celebration of National Doughnut Week in the UK, there’s no shortage of goodies on offer in supermarkets to honour the occasion.
From traditional jammy options to glazed rings and fancy Yumnuts, Laura Stott tries out a selection of Homer Simpson’s favourite snack.
Sainsbury’s
Chocolate iced ring doughnuts, £1.40 for pack of four
SLIGHTLY pricier than some others sold in a pack at 35p per doughnut but these in-store bakery treats were so tasty they are well worth the price.
There is no scrimping on the icing and they are topped off with an extremely generous amount of choc flavour sugar strands too.
Evenly sized, gooey and delicious. When you bite in you get all the flavours of a chocolate cake or brownie but in a doughnut.
The dough itself is fluffy and not greasy either. Yummy, even though they were a bit messy to eat.

Krispy Kreme
Filled doughnut, £2.55 each
AMERICAN brand Krispy Kreme is the go-to for many doughnut fans but the price of the treats is high.
This original filled version was patty shaped and incredibly sweet, covered all over with sugary glazing and stuffed with a jammy filling.
For me it was far too intense, sickly sweet and tricky to eat. It was also impossible to taste the dough for all the saccharine additions.
If you have an incredibly sweet tooth maybe you’ll fare better but, at this price, I wouldn’t part with cash for one of these again.

PIain Jane yumnut, £1.50 each
IF you fancy something a bit trendy, try this hybrid “yumnut” ring from the in-store bakery. It looks like a doughnut but is made with from the butter-enriched dough used in Yum Yums.
The flavour is much more patisserie-like, with loads of light, indulgent layers.
The dough is fried like a normal doughnut then covered with a sweet, buttery, sugar glaze.
Very decadent but tasty with a lovely sweet vanilla smell and taste.
Very rich so one is plenty, luckily as the price is high. But nice for a special treat.

Morrisons
Jam doughnuts, 90p for pack of five
TRADITIONAL style sugar-coated jammy doughnuts that deliver all the flavour you’d expect at a super price.
Fluffy, light and soft, these are sweet and pillowy when you bite in with plenty of oozy filling in the middle, so get ready to wipe your chin!
I really enjoyed the nostalgia of these in-store doughnuts, and no hole in the middle means they are very filling too.
Excellent value for money at 18p per doughnut and, although they are dusted with sugar, the sweetness doesn’t tip overboard.
Perfectly for feeding families.

Chocolate iced ring doughnuts, 35p each
DESPITE looking plain and uninspiring these freshly-made fried goodies didn’t disappoint on flavour.
The traditional-style ring doughnut was extremely generous – plump and bouncy with a lovely soft, melting texture, and bigger than your average supermarket offering too.
On top, a lovely layer of good-quality chocolate fondant icing, which adds just the right amount of sweetness.
There were some discrepancies in appearance but nothing that affected the enjoyment of eating.
Simple and tasty.

Pink iced ring doughnuts, £1.35 for pack of four
AT around 34p a doughnut, these made-in-store goodies offer excellent value for money.
The traditional fluffy ring-style dough is smothered in pink icing and sprinkles which gives these a real party feel, so they are ideal for birthdays or taking as a gift to any celebrations.
They are very sweet which isn’t surprising given the generous topping but I liked that there was no stinginess with the decorations and all the rings were evenly sized.
The dough wasn’t bad either, perhaps not the fluffiest but with a decent bounce and nice chewy texture.

Aldi
Village Bakery Iced Ring Doughnuts (pack of four), £1.15
ALDI’S hit the sweet spot on both palate and price. At just 29p per doughnut, they’re one of the best value that I tried.
While they weren’t my top rated on the taste front, there’s not too much to complain about either. Perfectly uniform in size, these four rings are topped with plenty of icing and a decent smattering of sugar sprinkles for a saccharine hit on the tongue and on the nose.
The dough itself was a bit disappointing, rather pale and slightly underbaked which was a pity. Still enough to enjoy for elevenses though.
