Women are the shock absorbers of neoliberalism. When wages stagnate, as they did for nearly a decade following the financial crisis, women are expected to work more. When the state decides to shred the social safety net, as the GOP threatens to do, women are burdened with an obligation to care for others, particularly children. From both sides and under the gaze of a misogynist president, the American woman is being squeezed. As Sarah Leonard of The Nation told me, “Something’s got to give.”

Before he even took office, Donald Trump was bragging about his presidency’s benefit to American consumers. “Thanks Donald!” he tweeted in December, after consumer confidence hit a 15-year high. On Monday, the president marked National Consumer Protection Week by touting “the importance of empowering consumers by helping them to more capably identify and report cyber scams, monitor their online privacy and security, and make well-informed decisions.”

The effort to convert candidate Barack Obama’s health policy platform into what became Obamacare began just days after the 2008 election, with the release of a detailed white paper written by Senate Finance Committee chairman Max Baucus that bears remarkable resemblance to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which became law nearly a year and a half later.

On March 8, International Women’s Day, America is going to have a day without women. A loose coalition of groups has called on women to go on strike from their paid jobs and the unpaid work of being a woman, and to boycott the entire system by refusing to spend money. They will be protesting many things, including President Donald Trump and his anti-woman, -immigrant, and -trans policies. But they will be united by one particular reason to strike: The undervaluation of everything that women do.

As climate scientists go, Wally Broecker is famous. The 85-year-old geochemist and Columbia University professor not only coined the term “global warming,” but was one of the first researchers to accurately predict how much the Earth’s temperature would change because of fossil fuel burning. A friend of mine has a favorite question. A local union organizer, he poses this question when he encounters people who won’t participate in the labor movement for reasons of ideological purity. They can’t go to the march, or sign the petition, or talk to their fellow workers, they will explain, because the movement doesn’t perfectly reflect all of their political beliefs, all of the time. In these instances, my friend asks: “Do you want to feel good about yourself, or do you want to win?”
