For all the praise that CNN’s graphics department has been raking in for its Trump-correcting chyrons, it was another visual from election night that caught my eye. Providing a breakdown of the Trump electorate by race, the outlet listed the voter groups as white, Black, Asian, Latino, and “Something Else.”

On Friday morning, after a full night spent counting and tabulating mail-in ballots, votes from Philadelphia may have delivered the final blow kicking President Trump out of the White House. Thursday, Trump attempted preemptively to cast doubt on the result. “They’re trying to steal an election, they’re trying to rig an election,” the deflated president told a White House briefing room, calling Detroit and Philadelphia “two of the most corrupt political places.”

Over the last four days, Fox News’s normal hierarchy has been inverted. Ordinarily, its opinion side—anchored by Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity, and Laura Ingraham—is the network’s beating heart, an engine powering large portions of right-wing media. Narratives spouted by these figures are embraced everywhere on the right; under Donald Trump’s presidency they have, at times, dictated government policy. This article was ostensibly going to be all about how Republican Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina seems to have come back to defeat Democratic challenger Cal Cunningham after trailing in the polls for months, and how that was made possible by a wave of Republican voters who turned out for President Trump. And maybe it still is. But first, I want to tell two stories.

The miserable presidential race is still underway, with stress-inducing counts slogging along in a handful of swing states; the much-rumored congressional blue wave turned out only to be a sad drip. This week, Trump supporters, occasionally armed, have attempted to interfere with vote counts in several cities. Late Wednesday afternoon, as Election Day stretched into Election Week, in cities and towns across the United States, grassroots Democrats took to the streets under a new banner: Protect the Results. A boisterous crowd stretching five blocks marched down Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. Hundreds marched in Boston.
