The Supreme Court narrowed a key exception in copyright law for unauthorized uses of artistic work on Thursday, ruling that Andy Warhol’s foundation had inappropriately licensed a painting of the musician Prince that was itself derived from a photographer’s earlier work. The decision will make it easier for artists whose work is later used or borrowed by others without permission to take legal action for infringement.

There’s a handful of likely Republican presidential candidates who want you to know that they’re really actually, super seriously, almost ready to announce their presidential campaigns. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and his team (and super PAC) have been about as coy as a monster-truck rally about his plans. Former Vice President Mike Pence is going to New Hampshire to sample the fast-food offerings, as one does (no one does just that, actually), and South Carolina Senator Tim Scott... Читать дальше...
Ronald Steel, who passed away recently at 92, was a giant in a small but significant field: that of the independent foreign policy intellectual. Without serving in government or working as an adviser to any politicians, he helped, in his writings and speeches, shape the way the issues were understood by those charged with making policy. For nearly 50 years, Steel wrote books and essays—many of them for The New Republic—that punctured the pious pretensions of presidents, senators, secretaries of state... Читать дальше...

All the hurt and the hate going on here (It needs to stop here)
We are rainbows, me and you
Every color, every hue
Let’s shine through (through)
Together, we can
Start livin’ in a rainbowland

Do you save enough for your retirement? Probably not. You know who does? Rich people. Not much of a surprise, I know. But you may not have considered how extravagant retirement planning for top executives beggars the rest of us. That’s something that never occurred to me before I read a new report on retirement inequality from the Institute for Policy Studies, or IPS.

There was a time when a certain set of moderate Democrats was the most tight-knit tribe of strategists within the party. They were more than just ideological acquaintances. They were even more than political allies. They were ideological soldiers fighting side by side to transform their party after two historic presidential routs in 1972 and 1984.

I’ve written a few times about New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, the Supreme Court’s major ruling on concealed-carry licensing last term, and how lower courts are using its history-and-tradition test to strike down restrictions on concealed carry in strange ways. It’s also worth exploring another aspect that’s flown under the radar: the ruling’s use of the phrase “law-abiding citizens” and the assumptions baked into that understanding. A decision this week by a federal judge... Читать дальше...
Until 2020, Eleanor Shellstrop, as played by Kristen Bell on NBC’s The Good Place, was the quintessential Arizona dirtbag. Before meeting her demise in a grocery store parking lot, Eleanor waltzed through life waffling on her ethics (she worked at a call center scamming the elderly) and embracing the ethos of self-interest. She’s since been replaced by another Arizonan with hazy moral convictions, Senator Kyrsten Sinema, who rose through local politics as a CodePink-friendly member of the Green Party... Читать дальше...
One of the clearest ways to see how a political idea lands in the real world is to actually run for political office. A candidate’s platform is tested time and again in conversations with constituents who want to share their own experiences and give feedback—whether that be at a meet and greet, a backyard barbecue, a rally, or just a chat on the street.
I wish I could tell you how deep
the suck goes,
how dark it is and holy,
its tragedies siloed. They dot
the landscape, with oxen, mud-hooved,
Many politicians have gotten away with behaving slightly weird, if not totally unsettlingly, especially in recent years. Perhaps that’s helped by the former president being as absurdly unusual and villainously criminal as he is. But still, Ron DeSantis is finding a way to make sure his bizarre behavior not only cuts through the headlines, but remains burned into our minds forever.
