Monday Memories: Eid al-Fitr celebrations began with prayer at Islamic center
Eid al-Fitr festivities end the holy month of Ramadan for Muslims, starting with prayer and followed by celebration. In this 1993 Blade archive photo a woman and child listen to Imam A. M. Khattab during a prayer service at the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo. Ramadan begins in the ninth month of the Muslim calendar, marked at the beginning and ending with the rising of the waxing crescent moon. According to Islamic tradition, God revealed the Quran, Islam's holy book, to the Prophet Muhammad on the 27th night. During the month Muslims practice daytime fasting, spending time in reflection and prayer. Eid al-Fitr is a special holiday, celebrated with feasting, gift-giving and family visits.
