Beer of the Week: SweetWater's new Gummies flavors can't match the hoppy goodness of the originals
Adding sours to the Gummies lineup did not have SweetWater's intended consequence.
Welcome back to FTW’s Beverage of the Week series. Here, we mostly chronicle and review beers, but happily expand that scope to any beverage that pairs well with sports. Yes, even cookie dough whiskey.
My first go-round with SweetWater’s Gummies line of fruited double India Pale Ales was a positive one. The fruit punch IIPA was a surprising hit, a blend of two things that shouldn’t go together but worked in concert to provide a boozy, drinkable beer. The tropical punch was less impressive, but still better than the pitch — hops + kids drink — would suggest.
That led to an expansion of the line into two sour flavors; cherry limeade and sour watermelon. Again; weird. But SweetWater has earned a place in my circle of trust dating back to grad school and $2.50 pints at the Flying Saucer on trivia night. Let’s see how those two new flavors rate — and if they can approach the surprising high of Gummies’ fruit punch.
