I think dddooommm has summed it up pretty well. I think the two missed friendlies showed as we looked a but undercooked. For a side that is pretty much newly put together, I don't think it was a bad performance.

Ref was awful and we ended up on the back of some tough calls which also stopped our momentum. Two tries disallowed and from where I was stood both looked fine, so will be interesting to look back at the replay.

It’s clear Tony Smith is getting his ‘brand of rugby’ across to the players.

Promoting the ball, pushing up on every carry, flooding through in numbers to back up a break and dynamic around the ruck.

I was excited about the Clifford signing and he was all class today. Fash was very good, led our line speed and showed some good ball handling skills to be the link man in the middle.

Round one, job done. A potential opening day banana skin avoided against a very tough and resilient Whitehaven side.

I felt at times it was a very stop start game where Whitehaven slowed down our progress and attack at various stages when we seemed to be getting a roll on. Clearly that was a tactic used by them to pause any momentum that we were making.

Defensively I thought we did very well, and their score came about after a dropped ball ended up back in their hands and they walked it in. Читать дальше...

I quite enjoyed it. Big packs have their flaws, the odd missed tackle the grain is to be expected. Outweighed by momentum and some heavy artillery for their defensive line.

One thing that concerned me early on was the defensive consistency on the right. There were times where Drinkwater, Matautia and Nicholson were all doing different things, but it seemed to improve as the game went on. That’s what these games are for though.

Ten point loss 20-30 from leading 14-10 early second half. We were there with first timers (our knowledge remains closer to first timers than experts in many respects still) so harder to follow what was going on. Defensively we still look a bit suspect especially under the high ball. Macani provided the x factor again. Raiwalui was missing from the 17 and may have made the difference.. Sounds like a good performance, but was hoping for a more stern test before the season begins.

Any thoughts after yesterdays friendly? Couldnt get there yesterday but wire friend of mine feedback was that we were error free for first 30mins, Hardaker, Ipape and Lam looked good but their pack were stronger late in the game. Looks like we were without Ben and Ava who I assume needs a few weeks to get to match fitness so can see that could have made the difference late on.

He’s fit to train but they don’t want to play him.

He will be rusty but shouldn’t take long. There is a reserve game soon so that may be the one.

Welcome back Eddie. Hopefully you can stay around for some chats throughout the season.

I’m much more optimistic today than I thought I would be. A lot of changes in personnel but I’d say most are for the better. I think we will be better than last year which hopefully gives us a bit more entertainment as last year was so so bad at times. I don’t think we will be good enough to be in the proper conversations at the top of the tree but playoffs should be the aim.
