According to Gabriel Agbonlahor, Tottenham Hotspur’s signing of James Maddison is a better piece of business than Manchester United landing Mason Mount.
Tottenham have long been lacking a spark of creativity in the middle of the park, and it is hoped that the acquisition of Maddison can unlock further attacking potential in the Spurs squad.
After monitoring Maddison for years, and actively pursuing the playmaker throughout the current transfer window, Spurs finally won the race to sign the 26-year-old.
The England international left recently relegated Leicester City for Spurs last month in a deal which reportedly cost the North London club around £40m (Guardian).
Meanwhile, Manchester United have just bagged their own England midfielder, after signing Mason Mount from rivals Chelsea for an initial fee of £55m (Sky Sports).
Maddison is a better player than Mount
Both players could well be pivotal to their new teams, but when asked which signing will be most effective, Agbonlahor had no doubt over Maddison’s suitability for Spurs.
He told talkSPORT (4/7/23 at 6:50 am): “I agree, £40 million for Maddison [is the best pound-for-pound deal].
“When he is playing in a team that’s all coached around him as well. I just think he fits into that Spurs team as well.
“Getting on the ball. Harry Kane, you stay further up. Son, you make them runs and I will find you.
“Value for money at £40 million, it’s a no-brainer. A lot better deal than Mason Mount. I feel [Maddison is] a better player.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Over the last two seasons, Maddison has registered better numbers than Mount when it comes to goal contributions and has done so in a struggling Leicester side.
I know which player I would rather have, and thankfully Spurs got the right man. I actually have a feeling Mount could be a flop at United.
