Madhumita Singh, a 13-year-old girl from a remote tribal village in the Mayurbhanj district, had resigned herself to the belief that she would never see her mother again. Tragedy struck her early on when her father passed away in 2014 when she was just three years old. Living in an area still gripped by superstitions and witch-hunting practices, Madhumita was separated from her mother, who had been unjustly labeled a witch and expelled from the village by her own family.

A 61-year-old Indian-origin doctor has been suspended from medical practice for three years in Singapore for improperly prescribing sedatives to his patients. Dr. Maninder Singh Shahi, a family doctor with 35 years of experience, pleaded guilty to 14 charges of professional misconduct. The long-term prescriptions created dependence and tolerance among the patients, posing a substantial risk. The sun peeped out after two days of fog on Wednesday, but icy winds from snow-clad mountains led to the maximum temperature slipping by 6.6 notches below normal, making it the season's first 'severe cold day'.
